چکیده

When fracture of the femoral shaft and dislocation of the hip occur in the same limb the dislocation is often missed. In this paper we offer a way to avoid this diagnostic pitfall. It has been estimated that combined femoral shaft fracture and hip dislocation occur once in every 100,000 cases of fracture (Wiltberger, Mitchell and Hedrick 1948). In a century and a half a total of eighty-one such injuries have been reported. Since Sir Astley Cooper described the first in 1 823, isolated cases and small series have been recorded (Bainbrigge 1846; Fergusson 1852; Malgaigne 1855; Delagarde 1866; Murdoch 1878; Kammerer 1 889 ; Wiltberger, Mitchell and Hedrick 1 948 ; Detzel 1953 ; Mau 1953 ; Zarotti and Albertini 1953; Verbr#{252}gge 1955; BUrkle de Ia Camp and Rostock 1956; Trojan and Perschl 1956; Merle d’Aubign#{233} and Lord 1957; Padovani 1957; Cataneo 1958; Salem 1961; Sch#{246}nbauer 1961 ; Wadsworth 1961 ; Nikolai 1962). There have been two major reviews of the subject, the first by Henry and Bayumi in 1934 and the other by Dehne and Immermann in 1951. We have seen two patients with this combined injury and have collected the records of a further twelve unpublished cases. Table I summarises the available relevant information on these patients.

High-energy pilon fractures management

Pilon fractures are distal tibia end fractures affecting the weight-bearing articular surface. They represent around 1% of all lower extremity fractures, and are more common in males between 35 and 40 years of age.1 Such injuries may be caused by highor low-energy mechanisms. Axial compression injuries where the talus impacts on the distal articular surface, causing implosion of the tibial plaf...

Open vertical sagittal fracture patella with fracture lateral condyle femur: approach to a rare injury

Patellar fracture is a relatively uncommon fracture especially the vertical sagittal type. In cases of high energy trauma injury, it is usually associated with fracture of ipsilateral distal femur or proximal tibia. However, the combination of vertical sagittal fracture patella and ipsilateral fracture lateral condyle is very rare. This necessitates judicious diagnosis and appropriate managemen...

Outcome of Distal Both Bone Leg Fractures Fixed by Intramedulary Nail for Fibula & MIPPO in Tibia

Background:  Fractures of the distal third of the tibia are mostly associated with a fibular fracture that often requires fixation. The preferred treatment of distal tibial fracture is the minimally invasive percutaneous plate osteosynthesis  (MIPPO) procedure. However, there are no clear cut guidelines on fixation of the fibular fracture and currently most orthopedic surgeons use a plate osteo...

Determination of the Best Method of Tibial Nail Length Estimation in Patients with Tibia Fracture

Background & Aims: Tibia fractures are the most common long bone fracture. Due to minimal soft tissue and its blood supply, inadequate treatment of injuries could be a major cause of morbidity and disability. The intramedullary nail is the preferred method of treatment; however, despite all previous studies, no accurate method to measure nail length prior to surgery exists as yet. Due to the im...

Segmental Tibia Fractures

Fractures of the tibia account for approximately 17-21% of all lower extremity fractures and approximately 2% of all combined fractures [1,2]. Within this number, 3% to 13% of tibia fractures are classified as segmental with most literature on this injury consisting of case series or retrospective reviews [3,4]. Segmental fractures of the tibia present a challenge to treating orthopedic surgeon...
